LIVING WITH SICKLE CELL DISORDER IS NOT SOMETHING TO BE ASHAMED OF

Living with sickle cell disorder requires a level of resilience that is unparalleled. It means picking oneself up, dusting oneself off, and trying again, even when it feels like the world is against you. It means finding joy in the smallest of victories and never taking anything for granted.

Every day individuals with sickle cell disorder face unique struggles that can be physically, emotionally, and mentally taxing. The pain that accompanies sickle cell crises can be debilitating, making even the simplest tasks seem impossible. But despite the pain,we continue to persevere.

Sickle cell disorder is a part of our lives, and we shouldn’t let it define us. It can be easy to feel like we’re less than others because of our condition, but that is far from the truth. We are warriors, fighting every day to maintain our health and be our best selves. We must remind ourselves that there is no shame in being different or having a medical condition.

It takes a warrior to strive with

  • A Genetic Disorder
  • having countless hospital admissions
  • Handling complications that comes with it
  • The stigma and financial implications
  • The countless doctor’s appointment
  • The frustrations our bodies puts us through when we need it to be sane the most
  • The fear of not knowing when the next crisis will occur and if we’ll survive it.
  • Allowing our cells to decide what we eat, wear, where to go, who to marry

Yet, through it all,we remain courageous and hopeful. Living with sickle cell disorder can be a rollercoaster ride. No doubts. It can bring days of pain and uncertainty, but it can also bring days of joy and triumph. Like any other condition, it has its ups and downs, but it’s important to focus on the positive aspects of our lives. We have little or much to be proud of, and we should embrace our unique experiences and stories.
