Make sure you know when to get medical advice and where to go, as sickle cell disease can cause a number of serious problems that can appear suddenly.
Problems to look out for include:
1. A high temperature over 38C (or any increased temperature in a child).
2. Severe pain that is not responding to treatment at home.
3. Severe vomiting or diarrhoea.
4. A severe headache or dizziness.
5. Breathing difficulties.
6. Very pale skin or lips.
7. Sudden swelling in the tummy.
8. A painful erection lasting more than 2 hours.
9. Drowsiness or slurred speech
10. Seizures.
11. Weakness on one or both sides of the body.
12. Changes in vision or sudden vision loss.
